Goals of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation:
To awaken an awareness and understanding of the balance of nature, and the vital role that animals play in the environmental network.
To teach ways to realize conservation of both wildlife and the environment in light of man's need to exploit both resources.
To enact specific wildlife management studies as they impact on the environment and the world at large.
To continue research in animal reproduction for captive breeding programs.
History of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation:
It would be neglectful to give a history of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation without speaking about William Holden.
William Holden, considered one of Hollywood's greatest actors and nicknamed "The Golden Boy" for his role in the 1939 film of the same title, first visited Kenya in 1956 and immediately fell in love with the wildlife and the environment. Holden purchased a local hotel and converted it into the Mount Kenya Safari Club. The Club was sold in the 1970s, but Holden kept the surrounding property.
Realizing that educating the people of Kenya was the key to wildlife conservation, Holden began a program involving the youth of Kenya, many of whom had never been in close contact with the wildlife that so many tourists came to see. His unfortunate and untimely death in 1981 seemingly left his dream unfinished.
Stefanie Powers, Holden's longtime companion and fellow wildlife enthusiast, made sure that his dream of an education center would come to fruition by establishing the William Holden Wildlife Foundation. As part of the Foundation, Stefanie built the William Holden Wildlife Education Center to preserve part of Holden's dream of educating Kenyans and conservationists about the intricate balance between conservation and the surrounding environment.
In addition to the Education Center, the Foundation has also created a rural program which provided information regarding conservation to area school children.
It is safe to say that William Holden would be pleased with the progress of the Foundation, and delighted to see that his dreams have become his lasting legacy.
